What is SIP Trunking?
SIP Trunking allows you to connect your existing phone numbers from any telephony provider directly to Smallest AI’s platform. Instead of renting numbers through us, you can bring your own numbers and route calls through a SIP trunk that connects your provider to our infrastructure. How it Works
- Your telephony provider (e.g., Telstra, Vonage, Telnyx, Twilio) hosts your phone numbers
- You configure those numbers to route through an SIP Trunk that connects directly to Smallest AI’s SIP infrastructure
- Once configured:
- Inbound calls to your numbers are delivered by your provider over the SIP trunk to Smallest AI
- Outbound calls from your AI agent are sent from Smallest AI back to your provider, who then completes the call to the PSTN
- Smallest AI handles the conversation and media, while your provider handles the telephony backbone
Benefits of SIP Trunking
- Keep your existing numbers: No need to port or change phone numbers
- Use your preferred provider: Work with any telephony provider that supports SIP trunking
- Flexibility: Maintain control over your telephony infrastructure
- Scale easily: Add or remove numbers without platform limitations
Prerequisites
To set up SIP trunking, you will need:1. A Telephony Provider that Supports SIP Trunking
Common providers include:- Telstra
- Vonage
- Telnyx
- Twilio
- Bandwidth
- And many others
2. Phone Numbers Ready to Route
Your numbers must be configured to point to a SIP trunk in your provider’s settings.3. SIP Trunk Configuration Details
You’ll need to obtain from your provider:- SIP server URI for outbound calls (e.g.,
sip.yourprovider.com
) - Supported transports: UDP, TCP, or TLS
- Media encryption: SRTP support (if required)
4. Authentication Credentials
Depending on your provider’s requirements:- SIP username
- SIP password
- Or mutual TLS configuration
Smallest AI does not currently have a fixed IP range for SIP servers. Make sure your provider can accept
connections without IP whitelisting, or contact us for alternative solutions.
Setting Up SIP Trunking
Step 1: Configure Your Provider
In your telephony provider’s dashboard:-
Set up inbound routing to point to Smallest AI’s SIP server:
-
Configure your SIP trunk with the following settings:
- Transport: UDP, TCP, or TLS (as supported by your provider)
- Media encryption: SRTP (if required)
- Codec support: Ensure common codecs (G.711, Opus) are enabled
-
Note your outbound SIP server details including:
- SIP server URI
- Username (if required)
- Password (if required)
Step 2: Import Your Number on Smallest AI
- Navigate to the Phone Numbers tab in your dashboard
- Click the Buy Numbers button in the top-right corner
- Select the Import SIP Number tab
- Fill in the required information:
- Phone Number: Your phone number in E.164 format (e.g., +12025551234)
- SIP Termination URL: Your provider’s SIP server URI for outbound calls
- Display Name: A friendly name for this number (optional)
- Username: SIP authentication username (if required)
- Password: SIP authentication password (if required)
- Copy the SIP Origination URL provided:
- Click Add Custom Number
Make sure the phone number you enter matches exactly with the number configured in your provider’s
dashboard, including country code.
Step 3: Test Your Setup
Once your number is imported:- Assign it to one of your agents
- Make a test inbound call to verify the connection
- Make a test outbound call from your agent
- Check call quality and verify audio in both directions
